3 Days · 2 Nights Private & Tailor-Made Start & End Marrakech Erg Chebbi Dunes
Overview

The most popular short desert escape from Marrakech — kasbahs, gorges and a night in the Sahara, all in three unforgettable days.

This private 3-day tour takes you from the Red City across the High Atlas via the scenic Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), down the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and deep into the Sahara at Merzouga. Along the way you'll explore the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, the dramatic Todra Gorges and the palm-filled Dades Valley.

The highlight comes at the end of day two: a sunset camel trek into the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi and a night in a comfortable Berber camp, with dinner, drums around the fire and a sky full of stars — followed by sunrise over the sand the next morning.

Your 3-day itinerary

Day1 Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Dades Over the Atlas to the kasbahs

We collect you from your riad or hotel around 8:00 AM and head into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with photo stops at Berber villages and viewpoints. Mid-morning we reach the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou — a film location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones — for a guided walk and lunch. We continue through Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Africa," along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the pink-hued Dades Valley for the night. (Driving: ~320 km, ~6 hours plus stops.)

  • Morning pickup from your Marrakech hotel/riad
  • Tizi n'Tichka pass & Berber village photo stops
  • Guided visit of Aït Ben Haddou + lunch
  • Ouarzazate & the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
  • Dinner & overnight in a hotel in the Dades Valley
Day2 Dades → Todra → Merzouga Gorges, dunes & a night in the Sahara

After breakfast we drive to the Todra Gorges, Morocco's "Grand Canyon," where 300-metre limestone walls tower above a narrow river path — free time for a gentle walk. We continue east through Tinghir and Erfoud (famous for its fossils) to Merzouga, arriving in the late afternoon. Here, a sunset camel trek of around 1.5 hours carries you into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes to your desert camp. Dinner, Berber drumming around the fire, and a night beneath an extraordinary canopy of stars.

  • Breakfast & drive to the Todra Gorges
  • Free time to walk the canyon floor
  • On through Tinghir & Erfoud to Merzouga
  • Sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Dinner & overnight in a desert camp (half board)
Day3 Merzouga → Marrakech Sunrise over the dunes & return

Wake early for one of the trip's most magical moments: sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at camp, we ride the camels back to Merzouga and begin the return journey to Marrakech, with stops along the way and lunch en route. We aim to reach Marrakech in the early evening and drop you back at your accommodation. (Driving: a long day, ~560 km — an early start helps.)

  • Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Breakfast at camp & camel ride back to Merzouga
  • Scenic return drive with photo & lunch stops
  • Evening drop-off at your Marrakech hotel/riad
Important Information

Good to know before you go

Everything travellers usually want to check before booking a 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour.

Best time to go

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal, with warm days and pleasant evenings. Summer is very hot in the desert, so dune time is kept to early morning and sunset. Winter days are mild but nights are cold — perfect for clear, starry skies.

Distances & driving

This is a long-driving tour: roughly 320 km on day 1 and up to 560 km on the return day, with winding mountain roads over the Tizi n'Tichka pass.

  • Early starts (around 8:00 AM) help a lot
  • If you're prone to motion sickness, bring tablets
  • Frequent photo, coffee & lunch stops along the way

What to pack

  • Layers — warm jacket for cold desert nights
  • Scarf, sunglasses, sunscreen & a hat
  • Comfortable closed shoes for the kasbah & gorge
  • Small overnight bag for the camp (leave big cases in the car)
  • Power bank & some cash for stops and tips

The desert camp

You'll spend night two in a Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes on a half-board basis (dinner and breakfast). We offer everything from comfortable standard camps to luxury camps with private en-suite tents, real beds and hot showers — just tell us your preference.

Camel trek

The sunset camel ride into the dunes lasts around 1 to 1.5 hours, with a second short ride back at sunrise. It's optional — if you'd prefer not to ride, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to the camp instead.

Who it's for

Great for couples, families, friends and first-time visitors to Morocco. Most fitness levels are fine — the walks are optional and gentle. The tour is private, so the pace, stops and camp comfort are all adjusted around you.

Questions & Answers

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough to see the Merzouga desert?

Yes — 3 days is the most popular option and gives you a full Sahara experience: the High Atlas crossing, Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges, a sunset camel trek and a night in the dunes. If you'd like a slower pace or more time in the desert, a 4-day version is easy to arrange.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable weather. Summer is hot in the desert, while winter brings cold but beautifully clear nights ideal for stargazing.

Is the tour private or shared?

This tour is private by default — your own vehicle, driver and schedule. Shared group departures can be arranged on request if you prefer a lower price.

What is the desert camp like?

You stay in a Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes with dinner and breakfast included. Options range from comfortable standard camps to luxury camps with private en-suite tents, real beds and hot showers.

Do I have to ride a camel?

No. The camel trek is a highlight but it's optional — if you'd rather not ride, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer into the dunes to reach your camp.

Can the tour end in Fez instead of Marrakech?

Yes. Many travellers do a one-way version finishing in Fez rather than returning to Marrakech. Just let us know and we'll adjust the route.

Is it suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. We adapt the pace and can replace the camel ride with a 4×4 transfer where needed. Families and senior travellers enjoy this tour regularly.
